Monsoon to Approach Karachi from July 15

Karachi saw hot and sunny conditions on Saturday, but relief may be on the horizon as sea breeze partially returned, helping to ease the intense heat.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), normal sea winds are expected to resume fully by Sunday, potentially bringing slight drizzles during the early morning and night hours.

A fresh monsoon system is projected to impact the city starting July 15, with light rain accompanied by wind and thunderstorms likely to occur between July 15 and 17.

Meanwhile, several districts in Sindh, including Tharparkar, Mirpur Khas, Sanghar, Sukkur, Larkana, Dadu, Jacobabad, Khairpur, Shaheed Benazirabad, and Hyderabad, are expected to receive moderate rain and thunderstorms during the same period, with possible intermittent breaks in between.

The Met Office reports that moist currents have begun entering the country and will strengthen further by July 13. A new westerly weather system is also predicted to reach Pakistan by the evening of July 13, triggering widespread weather activity.

Due to this system, rain with wind and thunderstorms, along with heavy to very heavy showers, are expected in the northeastern and southern parts of Balochistan from July 13 to 16.

The PMD has issued warnings of flash flooding in hilly streams, nullahs, and urban drains across several regions, including Murree, Galliyat, Mansehra, Kohistan, Abbottabad, Buner, Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Nowshera, Swabi, Mardan, Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Dera Ghazi Khan, parts of Punjab, Balochistan, and Kashmir during July 13 and 14.

There is also a high risk of landslides in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Murree, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan due to intense rainfall.

Additionally, low-lying urban areas in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sialkot, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Nowshera, and Peshawar may face urban flooding as heavy rain pours over the next few days.
