Karachi is expected to experience a severe water shortage of approximately 100 million gallons following a major power breakdown at the Dhabeji Pumping Station, reported ARY News on Tuesday, citing a spokesperson from the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KW&SB).
The disruption occurred shortly after midnight, at 12:20 AM, when a power outage struck the facility. As a result, Line No. 5 of the city’s main water supply network was affected at two separate locations, halting operations.
The K-Electric power failure significantly impacted water pumping activities at the station, causing immediate concerns for water availability across the city.
In response, the KW&SB launched urgent repair and maintenance operations, which are projected to be completed within the next 36 hours. During this time, the water supply across many areas of Karachi will remain affected.
This incident is not isolated. Just last month, a similar power outage at the Dhabeji Pumping Station—also linked to K-Electric—disrupted operations at both K-II and K-III pump houses. That outage rendered two major pumps non-operational for nearly 38 hours, resulting in a 171 million gallon water shortfall.
Several neighborhoods, including Nazimabad, New Karachi, Landhi, and Korangi, experienced severe water scarcity during that period.
Authorities are currently working to mitigate the latest disruption’s impact and restore water supply across the affected zones as swiftly as possible.
