The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has launched a solar energy project to light major roads across the city, with a completion deadline set for September 30.
The initiative is part of KMC’s broader shift toward renewable energy. Key roads selected for the solar-powered streetlights include Shahra-e-Faisal, Marine Drive (Clifton), Shahrah-i-Iran, and Shahrah-i-Firdousi.
According to KMC officials, the procurement process has been completed, and a shipment of more than 1,000 solar poles and lights is expected to arrive in Karachi by the second week of August.
“These are not just streetlights, they are a long-term investment in sustainability,” said Mayor Murtaza Wahab during a meeting. He added that the project is designed to reduce energy costs and provide an environmentally friendly solution. The lights will also come with a five-year post-installation operation and maintenance plan.
The mayor directed officials to ensure the deadline is met and warned that strict action would be taken against any delays.
In the same meeting, Wahab instructed the engineering department to install public restrooms in every district and busy areas of the city. He also directed the completion of ongoing development work at Hassan Ali Hothi Market, Empress Market (Phase II), and the Keamari Fish Market by August 31.
