Qualcomm is expected to unveil its next flagship mobile chipset in late September, but new reports suggest the naming may be a confusing mess. While it has been informally referred to as the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2, a rumor from China indicates it could launch as the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 instead.
Although “Gen 5” might appear to skip a generation, since the Snapdragon 8 Elite debuted just last year, this label makes somewhat sense, in a roundabout way. The original 8 Elite succeeded the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, making it effectively the fourth-generation chip despite its name. Therefore, the upcoming model would be the fifth, albeit very confusing.
Qualcomm is reportedly planning to introduce another high-end chip this year called the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, which will sit below the 8 Elite Gen 5 in the lineup. This structure places the 8 Gen 5 above the existing 8s Gen 5, but slightly below the new Elite version in terms of performance and features.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 has reportedly already been benchmarked in the upcoming OnePlus 15, suggesting that device makers are preparing to adopt the new chipset for their next-generation flagship smartphones.
Qualcomm has not officially confirmed the naming or release details, but more details are expected in the September event.
