The Punjab government has opened four newly developed galleries at the Harappa Museum, strengthening efforts to safeguard cultural heritage and expand tourism opportunities.
At the inauguration ceremony, Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb emphasized that the project reflects the provincial leadership’s dedication to conserving Punjab’s historic sites while making them more accessible to the public. “Heritage is not only about preserving our past but also about shaping our identity. Protecting it is a shared responsibility,” she noted.

The new galleries are designed to both preserve priceless archaeological finds and serve as a resource for academic research, adding value to cultural tourism across the province.
Tourism Secretary Dr. Ehsan Bhutta remarked that restoration initiatives following international standards would elevate tourism at both domestic and global levels. Meanwhile, Director General of Archaeology Zaheer Abbas Malik highlighted that the galleries employ modern display techniques to present Harappa’s ancient legacy in engaging ways. He added that the expanded facilities will benefit students, researchers, and visitors alike, turning the museum into a hub for education and awareness.
Officials noted that these developments aim to strengthen younger generations’ connection with their roots while keeping Harappa’s history alive for future study.
Harappa’s Historical Significance
Situated in Punjab’s Sahiwal district, Harappa was one of the leading cities of the Indus Valley Civilization, which thrived between 2600 and 1900 BCE. Alongside Mohenjo-Daro, it represents South Asia’s earliest urban society, known for advanced urban planning, sophisticated drainage systems, standardized weights, and flourishing crafts.
Archaeological digs have revealed seals, pottery, tools, and figurines that provide critical insights into this ancient civilization.
The Harappa Museum, established in 1926, has long safeguarded these relics. With the addition of the four new galleries, the museum is expanding its role as both a cultural landmark and a center for tourism, bridging the region’s historic past with modern-day learning and exploration.
