The Punjab government has launched a large-scale crackdown on vehicles that emit excessive smoke and contribute to environmental pollution. The move comes as authorities intensify efforts to curb rising smog levels across the province.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Traffic Polie Punjab, Muhammad Waqas Nazir, has instructed all Chief Traffic Officers (CTOs) and District Traffic Officers (DTOs) to take strict measures. He directed that unfit vehicles must be stopped from entering highways and made it clear that owners of such vehicles will receive no concessions.
As part of the campaign, traffic police have been ordered to thoroughly inspect the route permits and fitness certificates of vehicles. In addition, action will be taken against trucks and carriers transporting mud or sand without tarpaulin covers, as uncovered loads contribute significantly to dust pollution.
DIG Nazir revealed that the number of vehicles contributing to smog has risen by 240 percent this year, underscoring the urgency of the crackdown. He stressed that addressing vehicular emissions is a crucial step in reducing environmental hazards and protecting public health.
