The Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance has rejected the federal government’s recent increase in petroleum product prices, terming it unacceptable.
Alliance President Malik Shahzad Awan said that transporters are unable to absorb further financial strain, adding that repeated hikes in petrol and diesel prices are destabilizing the transport sector.
In response, the alliance has announced a 3% increase in fares. Awan warned that if the government does not reconsider its decision, transport unions will announce further steps in the coming days.
The development follows the Ministry of Finance’s notification on the revised petroleum prices for the next fortnight. The price of petrol has been raised by Rs. 4.07 per litre, bringing it to Rs. 268.68 per litre. Similarly, high-speed diesel has gone up by Rs. 4.04 per litre, now priced at Rs. 276.81 per litre.
The new rates took effect immediately after the announcement.
