The Sindh High Court has ordered the immediate transfer of a brown bear named Rano from the Karachi Zoo to the Bear Sanctuary managed by the Islamabad Wildlife Management Board. The decision comes after years of public concern over the bear’s poor living conditions and loneliness following the death of his companion in 2020.
During the hearing on October 14, 2025, the Senior Director of the Zoo Safari and Recreation Department (KMC) and Conservator of the Wildlife Department, Government of Sindh, appeared before the court and agreed to make the necessary arrangements for Rano’s relocation within two days.
According to the court order, the bear’s transfer will be carried out via air cargo under the supervision of Mr. Javed Ahmed Mahar, Conservator of the Wildlife Department, Government of Sindh. The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has been directed to fully cooperate with the officials to ensure the move happens smoothly and without delay.
The court also warned that if the relocation is not completed within the given time, the Senior Director of the Zoo must appear in person on the next hearing date to explain the non-compliance. The matter has been adjourned until October 17, 2025.
