A key meeting has been called by a senior minister in Lahore to discuss the possible celebration of the Basant festival, focusing on festival dates, administrative arrangements, and security plans.
Sources say various quarters have proposed holding Basant in February and March. Two date options are under consideration:
Officials stated that these dates were suggested considering the weather, administrative facilities, and potential public participation.
However, the final approval for Basant has not yet been granted, and the decision will fully depend on directives issued by the Punjab government.
The Deputy Commissioner of Lahore will issue the two-day permission for Basant only after receiving clear instructions from the provincial government.
For now, the festival is under discussion as a proposal, and the final announcement will follow the government’s decision.
The meeting will also thoroughly review safety measures, as in the past, kite strings have caused several accidents, which have been the main obstacle to the festival’s revival.
City residents and the business community have welcomed the potential revival of Basant, noting that the festival not only brings color and joy to Lahore but also significantly boosts hospitality, tourism, restaurants, and recreational businesses.
