KP Govt Takes Steps to Restore Student Unions

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has begun formal consultations to restore student unions in higher education institutions across the province.

The initiative was discussed during a meeting chaired by the Minister for Higher Education and Local Government, Mina Khan Afridi. The meeting was attended by officials from the Higher Education Department and leaders of student organizations, who reviewed proposals for reviving student unions.

Office-bearers from Islami Jamiat Talaba, Insaf Students Federation, Peoples Students Federation, Pakhtunkhwa Students Organization, and other student groups shared their recommendations.

The meeting approved the formation of a committee headed by Insaf Students Federation’s provincial president, Musharraf Afridi. The committee will include representatives from the Higher Education Department as well as leaders from various student organizations.

It was decided that the committee would finalize its recommendations within 15 days and present them at a meeting chaired by the higher education minister. The aim is to develop a consensus-based and practical framework for restoring student unions.

Addressing the meeting, Mina Khan Afridi said the provincial government was making serious efforts to restore student unions at the earliest. He said student unions are vital for developing capable and democratic leadership at both the provincial and national levels.

The minister added that the restoration of student unions would help counter dynastic politics, feudal mindsets, and the dominance of privileged groups. He said it would also provide young people with meaningful opportunities to take part in democratic processes.
