OpenAI Quietly Crosses $20 Billion Revenue as AI Demand Explodes

OpenAI reported annualized revenue of more than $20 billion in 2025, up from $6 billion a year earlier, as growth closely followed an expansion in computing capacity, according to Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar.

Friar said OpenAI’s computing capacity increased to 1.9 gigawatts in 2025 from 0.6 gigawatts in 2024, adding that weekly and daily active user numbers continue to reach record highs, Reuters reported.

The Microsoft-backed company said last week it will begin showing ads in ChatGPT to some US users, a move aimed at increasing revenue to support the high costs of developing artificial intelligence technology.

Product Expansion and Future Focus

Separately, Axios reported Monday that OpenAI policy chief Chris Lehane said the company is on track to unveil its first device in the second half of 2026.

Friar said OpenAI’s platform currently spans text, images, voice, code, and application programming interfaces, with the next phase focused on agents and workflow automation that operate continuously, retain context over time, and take action across tools.

Looking ahead to 2026, Friar said OpenAI will prioritize practical adoption, particularly in health, science, and enterprise use cases.

She added that the company is maintaining a light balance sheet by partnering rather than owning assets and by structuring contracts with flexibility across providers and hardware types.
