Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman, retired Major General Hafeez Ur Rehman on Thursday dismissed claims that a social-media firewall had been removed ahead of the 5G spectrum auction.
He insisted that internet governance mechanisms remain fully operational and do not hinder network performance. Addressing the National Assembly standing committee, PTA Chairman clarified that there is no “firewall” in place, but rather a Web Management System that has been operational since 2006 and last upgraded in 2023.
Also, other PTA officials said the system does not slow internet speeds, delay services, or obstruct new technologies such as 5G. Officials also revealed that the mechanism has previously been used to block platforms, including X, under court and government directives, while also helping curb grey traffic and prevent cross-border cyberattacks.
Lawmakers were told that digital security measures would remain intact as Pakistan moves toward the launch of next-generation mobile services.
