Pakistan is considering routing potato exports to Central Asia through China after regional tensions disrupted traditional trade corridors and increased transportation costs for exporters.
The proposal was discussed during the fourth meeting of the Committee on Potato Export chaired by Rana Tanveer Hussain, Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, to review the export situation and safeguard farmers’ interests.
Officials informed the meeting that the prevailing war like situation in Iran has made traditional transit routes unsafe, while the closure of the border with Afghanistan has further restricted overland access to Central Asian markets. Limited access to some Gulf routes has also complicated export operations for Pakistani traders.
The committee identified transit through China as the most viable route to sustain potato exports to Central Asia and said authorities are working to facilitate smoother shipments along this corridor.
Rana Tanveer Hussain said the government is also considering transport subsidies and concessional freight support to help exporters cope with rising logistics costs.
