GLOF Alert Issued for KP and Gilgit-Baltistan

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has issued a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) alert for upper parts of the country. According to the alert issued on April 2, a westerly wave is likely to affect upper parts of the country from the night of April 2 and is expected to persist until April 8, bringing intermittent rain.

Under the influence of this weather system, widespread rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds, accompanied by moderate to heavy rainfall and snowfall over hilltops, are expected in Mankiyal, Matiltan, Kumrat, and Utror-Gabral valleys of Swat, as well as Kandia valley in lower Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Reshun-Booni, Arkari, and Madaklasht in Upper Chitral.

The department said districts of Gilgit-Baltistan, including Ghizer, Hunza, Nagar, Astore, Ghanche, Diamer, Kharmang, Skardu, and Shigar, are likely to be affected.

The PMD said the expected persistent precipitation, coupled with snowmelt in high-altitude catchments and intense runoff generation, may significantly aggravate hydro-meteorological hazards in vulnerable valleys.

The alert noted the probability of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods in vulnerable glaciated basins and downstream settlements. Flash flooding is also likely in local streams, nullahs, and tributaries, particularly in river basins of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Heavy rainfall over steep slopes may trigger landslides, mudslides, and debris flow in mountainous districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan. Mountain roads and communication links may also face temporary closure or blockage due to debris flow and flash runoff.

All concerned authorities have been advised to remain alert and take necessary measures to avoid any untoward situation.
