Pakistan Likely to Miss Wheat Production Target Again Despite Bigger Crop

Pakistan is likely to produce 29.31 million tons of wheat during the 2025-26 Rabi season, slightly below the official target of 29.678 million tons, according to estimates presented at the Federal Committee on Agriculture meeting.

The projected output is 1.24 percent below the target, mainly due to a lower cultivated area of 9.385 million hectares, compared with the originally planned 9.648 million hectares.

Despite missing the target, the estimate still reflects a 3.13 percent increase over last year’s crop, when Pakistan produced 28.42 million tons from 9.1 million hectares, indicating an improvement in overall wheat output.

Of the total projected production, Punjab is expected to contribute 22.040 million tons, followed by Sindh with 4.402 million tons, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with 1.411 million tons, and Balochistan with 1.450 million tons.

The meeting, chaired by Rana Tanveer Hussain, also reviewed other crop estimates. Potato production is projected at 12.171 million tons, up 23.2 percent, while gram output is expected to rise sharply by 52.4 percent to 262,030 tons.

In contrast, tomato production is estimated to decline by 11.9 percent, while onion output is also expected to post a slight decrease.

Looking ahead, the committee fixed the 2026-27 Kharif crop targets, including cotton at 9.64 million bales and rice at 9.17 million tons.

Water availability for the upcoming Kharif season is expected to remain at 67.451 million acre feet, although soil moisture in key agricultural plains remains under pressure due to earlier dry conditions.

The committee was informed that seed and fertilizer availability for the next crop cycle is expected to remain sufficient, with comfortable urea supplies supported by local production and existing stocks.
