PM Orders No Cuts to IT Ministry Development Budget, Digital Pakistan Projects Protected

The federal government has decided not to reduce the development budget of the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, ensuring the continuation of projects launched under the Digital Pakistan initiative.

Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima announced that the ministry had successfully secured its full development budget in line with its requirements. Speaking to senior journalists, she said the IT Ministry’s budget remained intact despite reductions in allocations for several other ministries, highlighting the government’s strong focus on the growth of the technology sector.

According to the minister, the ministry is expected to receive the requested Rs. 22 billion in development funding, while the overall IT budget, including long-term projects, amounts to Rs. 76 billion. She noted that the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Finance, and planning authorities have maintained a clear commitment to supporting the country’s digital development agenda.

Shaza Fatima said special funds would be allocated for artificial intelligence training programs and startup development. She added that Universal Service Fund (USF) resources would be utilized to improve internet access and connectivity in rural areas, while expanding connectivity in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan remains a key priority. She also emphasized the importance of coordination for climate change initiatives and early warning systems.

The minister stated that implementation of Pakistan’s AI policy is progressing rapidly, with several AI-related projects included in the development budget.

Significant funding has also been earmarked for digital skills training programs aimed at young people. She revealed that around 900,000 individuals received digital skills training during the current year and that baseline testing of university students has been completed. The government, she said, remains committed to advancing the Digital Pakistan vision and connecting youth with modern technologies.
