Claude users are reporting a massive reduction in Opus 4.8’s context window just a few weeks after its launch.
One user wrote on X, “So Claude Opus 4.8 is back to 256k context? Anthropic, what’s happening? I’m confused.”
The post has added to questions around whether Anthropic has changed the visible context limit for Opus 4.8, or whether the issue is linked to account access, Claude Code settings, or platform-specific limits.
It is worth noting that the model launched with a 1 million context window, which has now reportedly dropped to 256,000.
Another user posted a screenshot showing proof of Anthropic dropping the context window for Opus 4.8. There hasn’t been any announcement from Anthropic so far.
Anthropic’s official documentation says Claude Opus 4.8 supports a 1 million-token context window by default on the Claude API, Amazon Bedrock, and Vertex AI.
The same documentation lists Microsoft Foundry separately with a 200k context window.
Anthropic’s Claude Opus product page also describes Opus 4.8 as a hybrid reasoning model built for serious coding and AI agents, featuring a 1M context window.
The confusion appears to be linked more closely to Claude Code and account-level access rather than a confirmed removal of the 1M context window.
Anthropic’s Claude Code documentation says Opus 4.8 supports an extended 1M context, but availability depends on the user’s plan.
On Max, Team, and Enterprise plans, Opus is automatically upgraded to 1M context. On Pro, 1M context requires usage credits.
Anthropic also says users can select the 1M version through Claude Code by using the [1m] suffix, such as /model claude-opus-4-8[1m].
