The Lahore Traffic Police has announced a stricter crackdown on motorcyclists riding without helmets as part of efforts to reduce traffic accidents and prevent loss of life on the city’s roads.
In a statement, Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Lahore Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi said helmetless motorcyclists will not be allowed to travel on major roads, including Mall Road, Jail Road, Canal Road and Main Boulevard Road. He added that special traffic police teams have been deployed at all entry points to the city to enforce the campaign.
Shirazi said the initiative is aimed at reducing traffic fatalities involving motorcyclists, who account for the majority of road accident deaths in Lahore.
According to traffic police data, 96 motorcyclists have lost their lives in 139 traffic accidents recorded so far this year. Head injuries remain the leading cause of death among riders involved in crashes. The CTO noted that motorcyclists account for 73 percent of fatalities in deadly traffic accidents, making rider safety a top priority for the department.
He said Lahore has more than 6.1 million registered motorcycles out of approximately 8.2 million registered vehicles, with motorcycles also accounting for the largest share of traffic accidents.
Shirazi added that the ongoing helmet enforcement campaign has contributed to a 40 percent reduction in head trauma cases. He emphasized that the objective of the crackdown is not to generate revenue through fines but to save lives.
The CTO urged citizens to wear helmets for their own safety rather than out of fear of penalties, stressing that helmet use and lane discipline are essential for safe travel.
