SpaceXAI’s Grok 4.5 Launches With Less Than Half the Price of Anthropic

SpaceXAI has announced Grok 4.5, its latest AI model and the first release since the company went public several weeks ago.

In a blog post published on Wednesday, the company described Grok 4.5 as a workhorse designed to handle a wide range of common AI tasks, including coding, app development, office and clerical work, research, writing, and other routine knowledge-based work.

Focus on Lower Costs and Greater Efficiency

According to SpaceXAI, Grok 4.5 offers “twice greater token efficiency” than other leading AI models. If this performance carries over to real-world use, the company says it could provide a significant advantage as token costs continue to be a growing concern for AI users.

SpaceXAI also shared benchmark results on Wednesday that it said demonstrate Grok 4.5’s competitiveness against other leading AI models, although the results fall just short of the best-performing models in the industry.

Grok 4.5 to Anthropic’s Opus

In a post on X, the social media platform owned by SpaceXAI, founder Elon Musk compared Grok 4.5 with Anthropic’s Opus large language model, which is designed for intensive and complex tasks.

“Based on strong positive feedback from customers in our beta test program, @SpaceXAI will make Grok 4.5 available to the public tomorrow. It is an Opus-class model, but faster, more token-efficient and lower cost.”

Musk later added:

“Our internal assessment is that Grok 4.5 is roughly comparable to Opus 4.7, but much faster. The combination of capability, faster speed and lower cost is what makes it competitive.”

Pricing Compared With Rivals

SpaceXAI has priced Grok 4.5 at $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens. The company says this makes the model highly competitive if its real-world capabilities match its claims.

For comparison, Anthropic’s Opus 4.7 costs $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens.

OpenAI uses tiered pricing across its model lineup. Its most expensive model, Sol, costs $5 per million input tokens and $30 per million output tokens, while its least expensive model, Luna, costs $1 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens.

AI Competition Continues to Intensify

The release of Grok 4.5 comes during a busy week for the AI industry.

OpenAI is expected to release GPT-5.6, its latest and most powerful model, on Thursday. The model’s release had previously been delayed by the Trump administration because of concerns over its security implications. OpenAI has described GPT-5.6 as its “strongest model yet.”
