Punjab to Establish Rs. 2 Billion Lab for Quality Testing of Medicines

The Punjab government has planned to establish a modern bioequivalence laboratory at a cost of Rs. 2 billion to curb substandard medicines and support the pharmaceutical sector.

According to officials, an initial briefing on the project has been given to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.

The proposed lab will allow medicines to be tested according to international standards. It will mainly help assess the quality, effectiveness, and performance of generic medicines through scientific testing.

Officials said the facility will reduce the need for local pharmaceutical companies to send medicines abroad for testing. This is expected to save valuable foreign exchange and lower testing-related costs for the industry.

The lab is also expected to help improve the quality of locally produced medicines and support Pakistan’s pharmaceutical exports by meeting international testing requirements.

Officials added that the project will promote research, innovation, and investment in the pharmaceutical sector.

The Punjab government believes the facility will play an important role in strengthening drug quality control and making the local pharma industry more competitive in global markets.
