Iran has instructed Yemen’s Houthis (Ansar Allah) to be ready to shut the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, the southern gateway to the Red Sea, if the United States attacks Iranian power infrastructure, Reuters reported.
Tehran recently conveyed the message to the Houthis after discussions within Iran’s leadership. Houthi forces have already deployed missiles and drones near the strategic waterway and are awaiting orders. Iran and the Houthis have not publicly commented so far.
The Bab al-Mandeb Strait is one of the world’s busiest maritime chokepoints, linking the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden. It is a key route for global oil shipments and international trade.
Any disruption could further strain energy markets and shipping routes, especially as tensions in the region continue to escalate.
