2,000+ Imported Electric Cars Arrive in Pakistan

Pakistan has received its first roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) vessel carrying more than 2,000 electric vehicles, marking the country’s first use of the specialized shipping service for automobile imports and a significant step toward modernizing its maritime logistics.

The M.V. Grande Shanghai docked at Karachi Gateway Terminal Limited (KGTML) at Karachi Port, where the vehicles were driven directly off the ship using built in ramps instead of being unloaded by cranes, significantly reducing handling time and improving operational efficiency.

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry described the arrival as a milestone for Pakistan’s maritime sector, saying it reflects the government’s efforts to modernize port operations and align them with international shipping standards.

The minister said the shipment followed his approval of RoRo imports for electric vehicles during a maritime committee meeting held last month. He added that the introduction of the service would strengthen Pakistan’s trade and logistics capabilities while supporting the country’s integration into global clean mobility and sustainable transport supply chains.

RoRo shipping is widely used internationally to transport wheeled cargo, including cars, trucks and heavy machinery. Unlike container shipping, vehicles are driven directly on and off the vessel through built-in ramps, making the process faster and often more cost-effective.

Chaudhry reiterated the government’s commitment to expanding modern maritime infrastructure and improving Pakistan’s connectivity with international shipping networks.

The development comes amid broader efforts to upgrade the country’s ports and logistics sector. Earlier this month, Port Qasim successfully handled the largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo in its history after safely berthing a vessel carrying 171,951 cubic meters of LNG during severe monsoon weather.

The operation was described by the Port Qasim Authority as a major achievement for the country’s energy security and maritime capabilities.
