Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) has issued final notices to a number of government and semi-government departments, warning of disconnection if overdue payments are not made immediately. Among the institutions issued with the demand for payment are the Prime Minister Secretariat, the Senate, and offices in Azad Jammu Kashmir.
In total, the departments owe more than Rs113 billion in unpaid dues, according to Dr. Mohammad Amjad Khan, IESCO’s CEO.
The largest defaulter is reportedly the AJK government, which has accumulated unpaid bills amounting to Rs105 billion. The defense/MES and Capital Development Authority (CDA) come next in line, with significant outstanding amounts.
Details revealed by IESCO indicate that the Defense/MES owe Rs3,211 million, CDA owes Rs2,880 million, Pak Secretariat c/o CDA owes Rs689 million, Cabinet Secretariat c/o CDA owes Rs79 million, Cantt Board Chaklala owes Rs896 million, WASA owes Rs449 million, and Defense Production Division owes Rs263 million.
The company has warned that if payments are not made urgently, the disconnection of electricity could cause significant disruptions to government services.
This move by IESCO highlights the importance of timely payment of dues and reminds all institutions, including the government, of their responsibility to fulfill their financial obligations.
The action taken by IESCO is a clear message that there is no exception to this responsibility, and everyone must pay their bills promptly to avoid any inconvenience.
This development also emphasizes the importance of efficient and effective management of government finances. With the current economic challenges that the country is facing, it is crucial to ensure that funds are allocated and managed properly. It is hoped that this situation will encourage more responsible financial management practices and promote a more efficient and transparent government system.
