RAWALPINDI: The construction industry in Rawalpindi is facing a significant crisis due to a decline in the number of building plans submitted to the approving bodies of the city.
The details suggest that the spike in the prices of construction materials has forced citizens and developers to halt their construction plans, leading to a drop in revenue for the civic agencies responsible for approving building plans.
According to sources, even the developers who have obtained approvals for commercial buildings are hesitant to begin construction work and in some cases, developers have applied for extensions after the expiration of approvals.
Moreover, institutions such as the Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA), the Rawalpindi Metropolitan Corporation (MCI), and the cantonment boards of Rawalpindi and Chaklala cantonments have been affected due to the stagnation of the construction sector.
According to RDA’s Building Control and Land Use Director and Chief Planner Jamshed Aftab, there has been a significant decrease in both commercial and residential building plans.
The official cited the “extraordinary increase in the prices of building materials” as the reason behind this trend.
The sources added that the cost of a ton of iron rods in the open market has reached Rs. 0.2 million, and the prices of other building materials have also been impacted by inflation.
Due to the rising costs, developers are reluctant to start work on approved plans, as confirmed by MCI Planning Officer Shahzad Haider.
The situation has rendered daily wage laborers unemployed, as construction work has come to a halt, as masons Muhammad Ramzan, Akbar Malik, and Shah Jahan, and laborers Muhammad Basharat, Samiullah, and Muhammad Yasin are finding it challenging to secure employment.
