PESHAWAR: The directorate of archaeology and museums has approached the police for registration of an FIR against a man who damaged a historical building in the walled city of Peshawar.
In a letter addressed to Shah Qabool police station, the head of the directorate sought an FIR against a man identified as Waseem.
The letter stated that the man started demolishing a historical building located in Mohallah Bahr inside Sarki Gate, Peshawar.
The damaged site was later taken over by the directorate, and guards were deputed to the site.
The building, owned by a Sikh and managed by a property dealer, had a two-story basement, which got exposed after the floor of the building collapsed.
According to an official, two-story basements were quite normal in old Peshawar architecture dating back to the Sikh period.
Even famed Sethi Havelis had such basements. The basement had not been in use for a long time.
The officer suspected that the roof of the basement collapsed due to digging in search of buried treasure. Despite two requests made by the directorate, the police have not yet registered an FIR against the man.
