Security Measure or Traffic Hassle? DHA Phase-1’s Service Road Divider Sparks Debate

KARACHI: The residents of Defence Housing Authority (DHA) Phase-1 and frequent visitors to the commercial area along Korangi Road are facing inconvenience due to a new brick divider recently installed along the service road.

This divider has caused confusion among road users as service roads are typically meant to be single-lane roads running parallel to main roads, providing access to streets and buildings.

Initially, the service road was converted into a double, two-track road during gas pipeline laying work in the area.

However, the installation of a permanent brick divider in the middle of the service road has left people puzzled and frustrated.

Some residents expressed their dissatisfaction, stating that service roads should not have dividers like main roads, as they are meant to be casual roads without a designated wrong or right way.

The congestion on the service road has also made it challenging for motorists to make U-turns on the narrow tracks.

Upon inquiry, it was revealed that the Cantonment Board Clifton (CBC) implemented the divider on the recommendation of DHA Security and Vigilance.

The main motivation behind this initiative was to deter street crimes that were prevalent in the area, particularly from the Nadra Mega Centre to the shopping malls.

According to the CBC spokesperson, street criminals, often snatchers on motorbikes, would easily escape into the back roads after committing thefts, making it difficult for anyone to chase them down.

The new brick divider is expected to hinder their escape and potentially slow down their vehicles, making it challenging for the thieves as well.
