PIDE Proposes Paid Parking Culture to Address Traffic Congestion in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE) has launched a study report recommending the implementation of a paid parking culture in Islamabad to effectively address traffic congestion.

The report highlights the negative impact of free parking on car usage and suggests a pilot parking plan for the city.

PIDE surveyed 66 parking locations in 17 busy markets of Islamabad and found a significant gap between parking demand and supply.

Moreover, motorists often spend extra time and fuel searching for parking spaces, even on the streets.

The study also revealed that around 69.3% of parkers are willing to pay for parking.

To address these issues, the report proposed the creation of designated parking areas with stalls for cars and motorbikes.

Furthermore, it also recommended the use of parking meters, a parking app, CCTV cameras, and traffic wardens to manage parking effectively.

The study estimates that implementing the proposed parking plan could generate around Rs. 51 million per month from just 30 parking lots in seven locations, helping to alleviate traffic congestion.

In addition, the report suggests three pricing options: a fixed price regardless of parking duration, peak hour pricing with higher fees during busy times, and marginal pricing with increased charges based on the duration of parking.

During discussions, it was emphasized that reducing car usage is essential, and alternative transportation options need to be improved.

The report launch provided a platform for stakeholders to collaborate and exchange ideas on addressing traffic congestion and parking challenges.
