ISLAMABAD: In a recent meeting, the sub-committee of the Senate Standing Committee on Interior chaired by Senator Moula Bux Chandio directed the Capital Development Authority (CDA) and Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad (MCI) to issue allotment letters to 180 applicants for stalls in five proposed Sasta Bazaars in the capital.
The Poverty Alleviation Secretary presented an update on the progress of the CDA’s Sasta Bazaars during the meeting.
As per the details, these bazaars had received a total of 1,590 applications for stalls, and the CDA is planning to set them up in H-11, I-14, Margalla Town, Humak, and Tarnol areas of Islamabad.
The CDA had recently invited tenders for the development work of these bazaars, which will offer a total of 3,000 stalls.
Furthermore, the civic agencies had specified that vendors with hacker pass and those whose kiosk licenses had been canceled would be given preference for allotment.
However, they received 1,590 applications within the stipulated time.
The sub-committee was informed that data from these applications was shared with the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) for assessment, and it revealed that 280 applicants were registered with BISP, including 24 classified as very poor.
Based on the BISP poverty index, the Poverty Alleviation Secretary recommended the immediate issuance of allotment letters to 180 applicants.
The first phase of allotment letters is scheduled to be issued on Wednesday, with the allocation process for the remaining applicants to be completed soon.
During the meeting, the chair emphasized the need to expedite the construction work for Sasta Bazars on the five designated sites.
The committee also recommended that in the next advertisement, applications should exclusively be sought from women as well.
Besides, the meeting was attended by senior officials from the Poverty Alleviation and CDA/MCI.
It is worth noting that CDA and MCI are already running several weekly bazaars, including H-9, G-6, I-9, and G-10 bazaars.
