PESHAWAR: Shafiullah Khan, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Peshawar, on Monday, denied rumors that a historic mosque in the provincial capital would be destroyed to make way for a commercial plaza.
The Deputy Commissioner claimed in a video message that such misinformation on social media was false and untrue.
He stated that Peshawar Development Authority and Communications and Works expert teams examined the “Speen Jomaat” mosque building and found it to be in poor condition, endangering hundreds of worshipers in the event of an accident.
He also claimed that around 60 seminary students had been moved to a rented premise in order to complete their studies.
According to him, the mosque would initially be shut off for safety reasons, and afterward, a new mosque with all modern facilities would be built on the same site while a seminary section would also be constructed for children with all educational facilities.
The Deputy Commissioner clarified that the land of the site was not owned by any individual, noting that the property had actually been purchased for University Town in 1956 and then given to the mosque by the then administration.
