PESHAWAR: The mayor of Peshawar, Haji Zubair Ali announced Rs. 15 million for reconstruction, sewage system upgrade, and repair work at Speen Jumat Mosque located on University Road.
Following a discussion with the locals, he held a press conference and cautioned that the district administration should avoid taking a position on any properties that fall under the purview of the metropolitan region.
He announced that there would be an investigation of the use of the Auqaf Department’s name in connection with Speen Jumat, out of concern that improper handling of the problem would worsen the situation.
Besides, he also emphasized the contribution of a local tribe in giving away land for the mosque and assured that the current structure would be safeguarded and upgradation would be done in the preservation of its historical landscape.
According to the mayor, politicizing this matter would not be permitted and casual management of the situation would lead to conflict between the public and government agencies.
It should be noted that the mosque was built in the 1960s and is currently quite dilapidated as a result of decades of ignorance and neglect.
Recently, Shafiullah Khan, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Peshawar also denied rumors that the mosque in the provincial capital would be destroyed to make way for a commercial plaza.
