CDA Considers Drone Technology for Firefighting Operations

ISLAMABAD: The civic agency is exploring the possibility of using drone technology to enhance firefighting operations, particularly in high-rise buildings.

The drones equipped with high-definition cameras and thermal imaging capabilities can provide real-time situational awareness, map fire perimeters, and identify hot spots, improving the efficiency and effectiveness of firefighting efforts.

According to official data, the Ministry of Science and Technology notified firefighting regulations in October of the previous year, mandating federal and provincial governments’ adoption of the Fire Safety Provisions 2016 and public and private organizations and authorities.

Presently, the civic agency has 25 fire tenders and four snorkels; however, the snorkels are unable to reach high-rise buildings during emergencies.

Drone technology is already being utilized for various operations in Islamabad, such as surveillance in hiking trails and sensitive areas.

These advanced drones are equipped with high-definition cameras capable of thermal imaging.

Notably, in many developed countries, firefighting drones carry multiple types of sensors that can detect heat from fires on the landscape, even at night and through smoke.

Besides, the data and images captured by these drones are used to create updated maps for firefighting strategies.

Firefighting in high-rise buildings poses significant challenges in Islamabad due to fire extinguishing equipment and tactics deficiencies.

A recent fire incident in a high-rise commercial mall in Blue Area underscored the need for additional machinery and equipment to handle such emergencies effectively.

Despite the potential benefits of drone technology in firefighting operations, an official stated that discussions about its implementation are ongoing.
