Commissioner Rawalpindi Steps Down as RMC Administrator

RAWALPINDI: Rawalpindi Commissioner Saqib Manan has resigned as the administrator of the Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation (RMC) after the Lahore High Court (LHC) ruled that the appointment of administrators and the distribution of development funds to lawmakers without the consent of the local government were unconstitutional and illegal.

On the other hand, work has been halted on development projects worth Rs. 500 million.

According to the details, the project was proposed by PTI MNA Sheikh Rashid Shafiq, Punjab Assembly members Fayyaz-ul-Hasan Chauhan, Raja Rashid Hafeez, Ijaz Khan Jazzi, and Chaudhry Adnan, and leader of the Awami Muslim League, Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed.

The chief officer is now in charge of the RMC’s administrative and financial matters after Rawalpindi Commissioner Saqib Manan withdrew from the position.

Although contractors had begun preliminary work on the previously awarded projects, sources claim that the development schemes for the building and repair of roads, streets, sewage networks, and the repair and installation of new street lights have been suspended.

The contractors had been instructed to finish development plans as quickly as possible. However, following the Lahore High Court ruling, all work on these development initiatives had to be halted.

It is to note that the members of the national and provincial assembly presented development initiatives for the current fiscal year, since Punjab’s lack of a local government structure.
