Dr. Ruth Pfau Honored: Islamabad’s Main Highway to Bear Her Name

ISLAMABAD: In a tribute to Dr. Ruth Pfau’s unparalleled contributions, the primary artery of Islamabad will soon bear her name. Dr. Pfau, who hailed from Germany but made Pakistan her home, spent an impressive 55 years combating leprosy in the country.

As part of this initiative, the chairman of the Capital Development Authority (CDA) is actively seeking input on the potential renaming of various highways to “Dr. Ruth Pfau Road”, especially since the capital has around 120 roads still awaiting names.

Born on 9 September 1929, Dr. Ruth Katherina Martha Pfau dedicated her life as a Catholic Christian religious sister and a physician to the Society of the Daughters of the Heart of Mary.

After moving from Germany in 1961, she became a beacon of hope for leprosy patients in Pakistan. Her relentless efforts were recognized with accolades such as the Hilal-i-Pakistan, Hilal-i-Imtiaz, Nishan-i-Quaid-i-Azam, and Sitara-i-Quaid-i-Azam.

Her legacy includes the establishment of 157 clinics across Pakistan, which have catered to over 56,780 individuals. Karachi now hosts the Fazaia Ruth Pfau Medical College and Dr. Ruth Pfau Hospital in her memory. The nation mourned her passing in August 2017 with a state funeral.

Earlier, the Federal Cabinet also renamed IJP Road as Karnal Sher Khan Shaheed Road.

This decision was publicly announced on Twitter by Chairman CDA, Noor Ul Amin Mengal. He praised the move, highlighting it as a significant recognition of Karnal Sher Khan’s courage and sacrifice for the nation.

The renaming serves as a heartfelt tribute to his unwavering bravery and dedication to Pakistan.
