Germany Pledges Over 163Mn Euros for Development Projects in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Germany has pledged to provide Pakistan with over 163 million euros for various development projects to enhance the country’s socio-economic development.

The announcement came after Government-to-Government (G2G) negotiations between the two countries were held in Berlin on May 8 and 9, 2023.

The negotiations were inaugurated by Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs of Pakistan, and Niels Annen, Parliamentary State Secretary for the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany.

During the negotiations, both parties agreed to fund projects in sectors such as climate, social protection, health, water and irrigation, TVET, and human development.

These projects will help Pakistan achieve its development strategy, the 2030 Agenda, and the sustainable development goals.

The German government has been a significant development partner of Pakistan for over six decades, and the funding is expected to strengthen their cooperation further.

On the occasion, Annen stated that Pakistan and Germany have a strong and stable development cooperation history.

He reiterated Germany’s commitment to supporting Pakistan’s development interventions and other spheres of mutual interest.

Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, in his statement, thanked Germany for its assistance in the socio-economic development of Pakistan and appreciated the much-needed support provided by Germany during the 2022 floods.

The negotiations were co-chaired by Dr. Kazim Niaz, Secretary of Economic Affairs of Pakistan, and Mr. Helmut Fischer, Head of the Pakistan and Afghanistan Division in BMZ.

The two officials expressed their commitment to close cooperation between the Ministry of Economic Affairs Pakistan and BMZ Germany to efficiently implement the development projects to achieve the desired results. The next round of G2G negotiations will be held in Pakistan in 2025.
