ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday issued a stay order against the construction of the Bhara Kahu bypass project on land owned by QAU.
As per the details, Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb heard the petition of five faculty members who wanted the Capital Development Authority (CDA) to stop building a section of the bypass project on the university’s land.
Advocate Malik asserted that the new bypass alignment would divide the university’s campus, with the road serving as a de facto border between the two sides.
The Advocate further argued that the CDA was demolishing trees in the area without obtaining an Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) report.
The court, in return, asked CDA’s counsel if the project’s EIA had been completed. The counsel responded that the civic agency had obtained approval from all relevant departments.
The court halted further execution of the bypass project until the project’s environmental impact assessment was completed.
On September 30, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif laid the groundwork for the bypass and directed the National Logistics Cell (NLC) to complete the project within three months.
It should be noted that the university’s supreme decision-making body, the syndicate, had approved the conditional land swap deal with the CDA for the Bhara Kahu bypass project, with nine out of twelve syndicate members supporting the agreement with the civic body.
