ML-I Upgrade: Pakistan Railways Targets 160 Km/h Speed for Passengers

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Railways is dedicated to completing extensive rehabilitation and reconstruction work on its railway tracks, aimed at improving the speed of locomotives to ensure punctual journeys for passengers.

According to a Ministry of Railways official, the ambitious infrastructure overhaul encompasses vital elements, such as the track and signaling system, spanning the Karachi to Peshawar route, specifically Main Line-I (ML-I).

Furthermore, a significant project involving the doubling of tracks from Lahore to Peshawar, covering a distance of 462.20 kilometers, is currently in progress.

With a current track length of 1,726 kilometers, Pakistan Railways envisions enhancing train speeds to a remarkable 160 kilometers per hour as part of the ML-I upgrade project, which falls under the China-Pak Economic Corridor (CPEC).

To achieve this goal of faster, more punctual rail services, the official disclosed that 230 passenger coaches and 820 Capacity Wagons are in the procurement pipeline under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) project.

As of now, the acquisition of 46 Completely-Built-Up (CBU) passenger coaches has been completed, with plans to manufacture the remaining 184 domestically.

These coaches are designed to operate at speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour, aligning with the Railways’ commitment to providing efficient and high-speed travel options for passengers.
