Pakistan Cement Industry Faces Decrease in Demand amid Economic Uncertainty

KARACHI: The All-Pakistan Cement Manufacturers Association (APCMA) has reported a decline in cement demand in February and eight-month fiscal year 2023 (8MFY23), with local sales dropping by 9% and 13.4%, respectively.

The decrease in demand is attributed to a slowdown in construction and uncertain economic conditions.

According to APCMA, the total cement dispatched in February was 4.040 million tonnes, a 7% decrease from the previous year. Local sales dropped from 3.943 million tonnes in February 2022 to 3.590 million tonnes this year. However, exports increased by 11% from 405,489 tonnes to 449,940 tonnes.

For the 8MFY23, the total cement despatches were 29.81 million tonnes, a decline of 16.65% compared to the same period last year. Domestic sales dropped from 31.416 million tonnes to 27.207 million tonnes.

An APCMA official, who requested anonymity, highlighted that the economic situation has worsened, posing operational problems for the industry.

The official emphasized the need for timely delivery of spare parts and consumables to ensure stable operations in the construction industry.

The spokesperson also urged the government to introduce industry-friendly policies to help the industry recover from the current situation.

Additionally, the industry is calling for measures to support infrastructure development, including a reduction in taxes and duties on building materials, and to provide incentives to promote affordable housing and real estate development.

The cement industry is a key contributor to Pakistan’s economy, and the decline in demand and sales could have a significant impact on the industry and the country’s economic growth.

Furthermore, the APCMA is calling on the government to take urgent steps to support the industry and promote investment and growth in the construction sector.
