PDWP Approves New Design for Remodeling Katchery Chowk

A new plan for remodeling Katchery Chowk has been approved by the Provincial Development Working Party to accommodate the greatest amount of traffic at the city’s main intersection.

Without shutting down traffic on the main square, the project is expected to be finished in less than a year. The new design will be implemented after a flyover is built to help handle traffic coming from the Rawat side once the Kharian Motorway project is complete.

The Grand Trunk Road and the proposed Rawalpindi Ring Road will be connected by the highway. This will provide an easy route to more that 13 lac vehicles per day.

The previous design was only capable of accommodating only 100,000 vehicles.

The task has been entrusted to the National Highway Authority through a competitive bidding.

The project’s cost has also risen, from Rs.4.879 billion to Rs.6.422 billion, due to a 25% increase in the cost of construction materials with the addition of the flyover.

Furthermore, the RDA Chief Engineer Dr Habibul Haq Randhawa stated, “The proposed improvement will provide uninterrupted flow of two-way traffic along GT Road (N-5) at Katchery Chowk intersection, which will benefit the daily commuters apart from overcoming the traffic problems in terms of delays, fuel consumption.”
