Preparations Underway in Lahore for Managing Monsoon Season

LAHORE: To effectively assess rainfall intensity and manage wastewater during the upcoming monsoon season, 16 rain-measuring gauges have been installed at various locations across the Lahore district.

This initiative was announced during a meeting held to review monsoon arrangements, which was chaired by Lahore Commissioner/LDA DG Muhammad Ali Randhawa.

Officials briefed the commissioner about the monsoon preparations, stating that emergency camps will be set up at 19 vulnerable points in the city.

The monsoon season is expected to span from July 1 to September 30 in Lahore. They further informed that Wasa (Water and Sanitation Agency) has completed the desilting process for 2,618 out of the total 3,000 km of sewer lines.

During the meeting, Commissioner Randhawa emphasized the need for comprehensive arrangements to handle the monsoon season.

He directed Wasa to install gratings in all areas of the city and formed a joint committee comprising Wasa, LWMC (Lahore Waste Management Company), MCL (Metropolitan Corporation Lahore), and district administration to ensure the timely completion of desilting for all drains and major sewer lines.

The commissioner also called for a special cleaning drive under all bridges before the monsoon, with penalties imposed on those who dispose of garbage in drains.

In a separate meeting with a delegation from the Bank of Punjab, Commissioner Randhawa discussed the potential for revenue generation through collaboration with the banking and corporate sectors.

He suggested the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between LDA (Lahore Development Authority) and BoP to explore various investment opportunities.
