Sub-Committee Formed to Assess Eligibility of Tarbela Dam Affectees

ISLAMABAD: A sub-committee has been established by a parliamentary body of the Upper House of Parliament to review the eligibility of 449 individuals affected by the Tarbela Dam.

According to sources, Senator Dr. Muhammad Humayun Mohmand has been nominated as the convener of the committee.

These affected individuals were unable to receive their compensation due to their properties being affected by the construction of the Tarbela Dam.

The meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Water Resources was held at the Parliament House, with Senator Syed Muhammad Sabir Shah chairing the session.

During the meeting, the Senate Committee was briefed on the situation of the Tarbela Dam affectees and the progress made in compensating them.

Officials informed the committee that a total of 82,109 acres of land were acquired for the dam, impacting approximately 96,000 people.

Furthermore, compensation has been provided to most of the affectees, and owners of 04 kanal agriculture land and 16 kanal barani land were offered state land in Punjab and Sindh after receiving their compensation.

However, it was noted that 449 affectees have not received any compensation.

Officials explained that around 450 affectees had taken their cases to the Peshawar High Court, which directed the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) to reassess their eligibility. As a result, one affectee was found eligible for compensation.
