Twin Cities to Get 3 New Sewage Treatment Plants

ISLAMABAD: To tackle the ongoing water crisis in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, approval has been granted for the installation of three new state-of-the-art sewage treatment plants.

These plants will treat the water of Rawal Dam, which is the primary source of drinking water for the twin cities.

The project is estimated to cost around Rs. 6.07 billion and is expected to commence in July this year, with a completion target of nine months.

Besides, the catchment area of Rawal Dam is approximately 106.25 square meters, extending from Murree Hills and Bani Gala to Rawal Dam.

Given the vast catchment area, expanding and increasing the water treatment plants was deemed necessary.

Furthermore, Capital Development Authority (CDA) and Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) Rawalpindi will jointly execute the project, while the Central Development Working Party (CDWP) has also approved the project.

The existing water treatment plants have fallen short, prompting the need for the installation of three new sewage water treatment plants that will enhance water purity.

According to sources, Rawal Dam supplies 25 million gallons of water every day to the garrison city, and the new treatment plant installation is set to increase this supply.

Additionally, WASA plans to build two large water tanks at Rawal Dam, along with the WASA Colony Quarters.

The agency will lay a small-diameter steel pipeline inside the old dilapidated cemented water supply line from Rawal Dam to Rawalpindi to increase the 10 to 15 million gallons of water supply to the garrison city during the new financial year of 2023-24.
