The Real Samsung Galaxy S8 Revealed in New Leaked Photo

As the days roll by, more and more rumors and leaks about Samsung’s upcoming flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S8 begin to emerge. This time a new leak has emerged from one of the industry’s most credible industry insider, Evan Blass.

Previous rumors suggested that the Galaxy S8 will look like this:

And the new image confirms that the front will be similar to the rumors while the back will largely resemble the Galaxy Note 7, albeit with a couple of minor changes.

This could be our very first look at the upcoming flagship smartphone. The above image also confirms some other rumors such as the decision to get rid of the home button which also housed the fingerprint scanner.

By removing the home button, the fingerprint scanner also needed to find a new home. Initial rumors suggested that Samsung will embed it under the screen. However, a bigger majority suggested it would be placed on the back of the phone. And as apparent from the above photo, the sensor is placed to the right of the camera. It is an odd location and people moving from older Samsung devices will have a hard time adjusting to it.

Some rumors suggested that Samsung will stick with the old microUSB 2.0 but with the recent Galaxy Note 7 and even the new 2017 Galaxy A series smartphones having the USB Type-C port, it was a no-brainer that Samsung is now making USB Type-C the standard across all its smartphones.

There’s also more good news. Samsung is keeping the much-loved 3.5mm headphone jack. So, unlike some company’s phones (*cough*Apple*cough*), with the Galaxy S8 you don’t have worry about looking for a dongle for something as simple as your earphones.

Two variants?

Other rumors suggest this year’s model will also have two different variants of the phone, just like last year’s model. However, unlike last year’s model the screen size won’t be the same as the outgoing model. The ‘regular’ Galaxy S8 is expected to come with a 5.8-inch display whereas the ‘plus’ model will have a 6.2-inch display. Both will be using QHD, Super AMOLED panels that will be covering 83% of the screen. Evan Blass has also reported that the displays will be pressure sensitive. This technology will be known as force touch and will work more or less like Apple’s 3D Touch.

Performance, Storage, Camera & Battery

Being a flagship smartphone, expect no compromises on performance from Samsung. This year’s model is rumored to house the best performance hardware that is available.

Depending on the market, the Galaxy S8 will have two different processors. One would be the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 and the other will be Samsung’s own Exynos. Both of them will be produced using a 10-nanometer fabrication method. All of this will supposedly make the Galaxy S8 at least 11% faster in terms of performance, 23% faster in graphics processing and 20% more energy efficient over the Galaxy S7.

For multitasking, Samsung is rumored to include 4GB of RAM and the base storage has been set at 64GB along with a microSD card.

The primary camera will not see a change and will remain the same as the Galaxy S7. And that is not necessarily a bad thing. The Galaxy S7’s 12MP camera was one of the best in business last year. The front camera, however, will see and improvement, jumping to 8MP from last year’s 5MP.

In terms of battery, you will get a 3,000mAh power pack with the 5.8-inch variant and a 3,500mAh one with the 6.2-inch variant.

Launch Date

For several years, Samsung has always unveiled the latest Galaxy S model at the start of the Mobile World Congress, in Barcelona, Spain around the end of February. However, that isn’t the case this year as Samsung has officially announced that it won’t be launching it in February this year.

Instead, this year’s Samsung event will take place on March 29th in New Your City, according to Evan Blass. This is due to the Note 7 recalls which have forced Samsung to take extraordinary steps to make sure the next flagship is safe for the public and won’t be riddled with the same problems. We’re hoping that the Galaxy S8 is hot this year, figuratively, not literally speaking.
