We all remember the dreaded and unfortunate Note 7 disaster from last year. The phone suffered from exploding batteries. The batteries were never really fixed, even after the recall.
What you won’t remember is that iPhone 7 was also reported with a few incidents of explosions last year. We didn’t hear much about it this year, however, that is likely to change with the new iPhone 8.
People are reporting that the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus’ are opening up (the screen panel comes off).
No explosions so far, but the incident itself is being widely reported from China, Canada, Greece, Japan and Taiwan.
Some say that their iPhone 8 swells up when they charge it, while others are receiving their new phones ballooned up inside the box.

What Causes a Swollen Battery?
There’s only one reason why batteries swell up. According to Charudatta Galande, who works in a li-ion battery research lab,
Bulging batteries mean only one thing – buildup of gas inside. The gases are produced due to electrochemical oxidation of the electrolyte. Such oxidation occurs usually due to overcharging of the battery due to a faulty battery, or faulty charging electronics in the phone or battery charger.
What Does This Mean for iPhone Owners?
At this point, this is pretty much confirmed that this is a battery defect. It is likely a manufacturing fault on Apple’s side. Apple is thankfully, officially looking into this problem and we might get an answer from the Cupertino based company in a few days time.
Until then, avoid using your iPhone 8 or 8 Plus if it has a swollen battery as it is likely to cause fire-y problems down the line.
