Urdu Thesaurus is the world’s first service of its type. Founder Musharraf Ali Farooqi has developed and released the thesaurus as a website as well as an Android app through his publishing house Kitab.
As the name suggests, the Urdu thesaurus service provides synonyms for any Urdu word you type. According to the developer, the service has a database of over 40,000 unique words and over 20,000 sets of synonyms. All of these words and synonyms sets are searchable through the built-in search bar.
Farooqi is hoping for exponential growth in the service as the resource gathers more data. He plans to add bilingual dictionaries and special terminologies from different fields like arts, science, law, medicine and others. Soon, the service will be usable for complex translations.
Plans are also underway to launch a vocabulary building tool for kids to promote Urdu language and improve the new generation’s control over their national language. Academics and students can benefit from the service as it is simple and accessible for anyone.
Background of the Service
The editorial advisory board of this service consists of popular figures like Tehsin Firaqi, Moeen Nizami, Muhammad Salim-ur-Rahman, and Mazhar Mahmood Shairani. The developer credits Dr Athar Awais for his research in Natural Language Processing and Information Retrieval and assistance in the development phase of the service.
Musharraf Ali Farooqi developed the Urdu Thesaurus over a 5 year period. He noticed the need for such a service but saw that there was none in the market. He says this is a free educational resource developed privately without any assistance or funding from a third party. Still in beta, the product will undergo several iterations before being finished.
Website
The website comes with a simple design and English & Urdu versions. There is an always-on-top search bar to search for Urdu text. The developers recommend using the free CLE keyboard for typing in the search bar.
Android App
The Urdu Thesaurus app is as simple as they get. There’s a search bar at the top and words in alphabetical order below that. These words are scrollable. When you select a word you can see multiple sets of synonyms for each word. The results can also be shared from within the app. During the beta stage, users can copy the synonyms or send feedback if the result is incorrect.
The Urdu Thesaurus can be accessed using the website or app, both linked below.
