Huawei’s held its “Collaborate 2016” summit recently in Islamabad where all telecom operators, including Mobilink, Zong, Ufone, Telenor, PTCL, alongside other partners who are in the run to acquire DTH licenses (Shahzad International, Witribe, Parus, Nayatel, Transworld) were invited.
Additionally some 30 local and international content providers also attended the summit.
Chairman PTA, Syed Ismail Shah participated as the Chief Guest.
All attendees discussed the digital ecosystem in Pakistan and issues regarding digital services, including Mobile video/mobile game/digital music/VR /IoT/digital transformation, etc.

OVUM Analyst Mr. Ismail Patel shared an analysis on the current situation and future trends of the Pakistani Vodeo market. He said that mobile video will be the next big thing as wireless technology has developed fast, with Smartphone penetration increasing rapidly in Pakistan lately.
During the discussions, ideas and suggestions were presented to the government, operators, content providers and vendors to play their due role for developing this ecosystem.
Mr. Justin Chen, Director of Huawei ME Hosting Center made a speech to introduce Huawei’s proposition in digital value chain through “Digital in Cloud” solution. He stated that Huawei’s solution can act as a bridge to fill in gaps for Operator(s) and content providers(s).
Another speech was given from Huawei IoT Expert Mr. Sammy Shen as he shared a comprehensive analysis of IoT and what Huawei is doing in this domain.
Speakers from all major mobile operators including (Mobilink, CMPak, Ufone and Telenor) shared their experience and ideas respectively.
- Ali Khan Head of Data, Devices and OTT from Mobilink shared the success cases and his experience to monetize revenue through digital services.
- Ebad Ahmad Khan, Head of Product Innovation from CMPak, focused on how to find opportunity when operators compete with OTT players.
- Asad Mohsin, GM of IT Platform from Ufone, shared his experience on how enterprises embrace digital transformation.
- Usman Dastagir, Head of IoT from Telenor shared his thoughts about the IoT market and how the government needs to formulate a special policy to support it.
VGAME and iDreamSky, games companies from China shared their experience especially their partnership with Huawei, and their market value in Pakistan. Justin Jiang, Director of Marketing from VGAME told attendees that initially they will launch global products and localize the same for Pakistan. Jerry Weng, director of Marketing from iDreamSky stated that their company will start with casual games and introduce mid/hardcore games later in Pakistan.
Local content providers RockVille and ideation also shared their experience and suggestions.
Mr. Abrar Ali Khan , CEO of Rockville, mentioned that operators need to work with VAS providers and build mutually beneficial eco-systems and create strategic positions via branded content portals.
Mr.Waqas Zahid Abbasi, CEO ideation shared his thoughts about why VR (Virtual Reality) will be the future.
During the event, booth areas were set up for attendees to check out Huawei partner cooperation platform “inTouch”, Huawei Digital service MuchTV and Gaming, and products demonstration from local CP/Chinese CPs. Many attendees spent time on the VR products on display.
In the afternoon, a panel discussion was organized regarding “how digital service will be developed?”, Management from Zong, Local CPs, Analyst from OVUM and Hosting director from Huawei had a deep communication and exploration regarding future trend (s) of digital service development. Everyone agreed that potential is huge, but government needs to make some special policy to accelerate digital transformation.
At the end of the summit, several local CPs were invited to a ceremony for partner sign-off . Ideation CEO signed the first MOU with Huawei Technologies during this ceremoney and so did Unicorn Black signed as well. The move is expected to encourage a lot of local partners for collaborations in the future, with an eye on opening new digital revenue streams.
