Intel’s 7th Generation Kaby Lake Processors Are Here

One of the world’s biggest computer chip makers, Intel, has unveiled their newest 7th Generation of Intel Core processors.

Known as the “Kaby Lake” series these processors were first announced a few months back for laptops and ultra-portables. Now the company has announced the desktop and workstation line of Kaby Lake processors.

Lets get a few things out of the way first. There are 4 different types of processors in the Kaby Lake lineup:

  • The “H” series, geared towards performance laptops and mobile workstations.
  • The “S” series, for the desktops
  • “Y” series, which is aimed towards the ultra-thin notebooks (extremely low power usage, light usage)
  • “U” series for faster ultra portables (use more power than the Y series, for enterprise laptops and such)

The Y and U series were announced a few months earlier and are already featured in high end ultrabooks.

Performance Comparison

Starting from the H series, Intel says that the 7th Generation H series of processors will perform 20 percent faster on average compared with similar 4th Generation processors. Meaning an Intel Core i7 -7700 HQ will perform only 20 percent faster than an Intel Core i7 – 4700 HQ, which came out more than 2 years ago.

An added tidbit is that these processors will be able to process 4K 360-degree videos 65 percent faster than the comparable 4th Gen processors as well.

The H series will be mainly used in high end or gaming laptops and will combine well with Nvidia’s new 10 series and AMD’s Polaris GPUs.

The company is mostly comparing 7th Generation processors with 4th Generation processors. The desktop “S” series also features similar performance differences. An Intel Core i7-7700K (7th Gen) will be 25% faster than an  i7-4770K (4th Gen) chip.

The 4K 360 degree video processing is also faster on the S series with a 35% performance difference compared with 4th Gen processors.

The First Core i3 K Series Chip

Intel is also offering, for the first time ever, an unlocked “K” version of their Intel Core i3 chip for the Kaby Lake lineup.

The Intel Core i3 – 7350K will feature a base clock of 4.2 GHz with 2 cores and 4 threads (Hyper-threading). Intel claims that all of the Kaby Lake processors will overclock better compared with previous generation processors. This is due to a number of features included in the processors by Intel which will stabilize their temperature and voltage.

The performance difference between the previous generation and the new Kaby Lake processors is negligible. This will be a good time for you to upgrade your PC if you have a PC that features a 4th Gen Intel Core processor or older. Current gen systems can sit this generation out.

  • This is the most useless release ever with almost no IPC gains as compared to Sky Lake..
