Punjab Police Seizes 260,000 Illegal Number Plates in Lahore Crackdown

Illegal number plate holders beware. The Excise Department has teamed up with Special Monitoring Unit Punjab to launch a crackdown in Lahore against illegal number plates.

As many as 260,000 number plates were seized according to Director General CM’s Strategic Reform Unit, Salman Sufi. The number plates were seized under  the operation “Transport sahulat program” which is in its second phase currently.

Illegal Plate Makers Also Targeted

Mr. Salman adds that besides the seizure of illegal number plates, the manufacturers behind these forged plates were also targeted.

The aim of this crackdown is to assist the new security cameras installed in several areas within the city to be able to properly scan the number plates. The number plates not registered at Excise and Taxation Department cannot be scanned which is why the crackdown was launched.

Any number plates with slogans, designations or showing affiliation with any organization private or public were seized. The authorities mentioned that the operation is going to accelerate in the coming days.

First Phase of the Program

Earlier Lahore’s City Traffic Police’s spokesperson mentioned that as many as 279,274 challans have been lodged in 2016 alone for illegal number plates and tinted windows of cars.

Chief Traffic Office (CTO) Tayyab Hafeez Cheema mentioned that 62,293 ‘Applied for’ vehicles, 371 green plates and 158,152 vehicles have been fined in Lahore alone. This was the first phase of the aforementioned Transport sahulat program.

Launched Under PCSA’s Campaign

Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PCSA) was set to launch a new traffic management system with new security cameras installed across Lahore. The system requires standard number plates that can be easily recognized by these security cameras.

New traffic lights along with separate lane for motorcyclists was also in the pipeline for the new system.

PCSA teamed up with the Excise Department to launch a campaign to standardize number plates according to the Excise Department’s standards.

Punjab government passed a bill for this as well. Anyone which uses a non-standard number plate will be imprisoned for 5 years according to this bill.
