Govt to Split MEPCO, LESCO & PESCO to Focus on Customer Oriented Approach

Ministry of Energy’s Power Division has ordered the bifurcation of Multan, Lahore and Peshawar Electric Supply Companies (MEPCO, LESCO, PESCO).

The Bifurcation of MEPCO, LESCO and PESCO must be decided by their respective Board of Directors and their concerned CEOs must table the consolidated proposals for consideration of BoDs immediately.

The Federal Minister approved this in a meeting on the bifurcation of LESCO, MEPCO and PESCO, for better management and developing a consumer oriented approach Thursday, said an official statement released by the Power Division.

The Minister further directed that BoDs of the DISCOs should be involved in all decisions and their decisions should be implemented in letter and spirit. He further directed the Power Division to enhance the capacity of the existing BODs by inclusion of diverse professionals from different walks of life.

The Minister said that BODs should play a vigilant and decisive role in the strategic decision making process and should exercise their authorities as per the corporate governance.

The Federal Minister for Power Division noted that all the DISCOs should be financially autonomous and they should be able to generate their own funds from the open market instead of the government.

The Minister assured that all efforts will be directed towards making the DISCOs function without political interference and directed the DISCOs to take strict administrative actions against the employees that use political or other influence.

He also expressed serious concerns over the HR departments of DISCOs, which have failed in exploiting the existing potential of their HR and also in strengthening themselves by filling the vacant positions. He directed that all the vacant positions at officer level must be filled at the earliest. The use of HR and filling of vacant posts is bound to bring in more efficiency in their operation, added the Minister.

In addition, he also directed to introduce lucrative rewards for the top performers at each DISCO, to encourage them and also to promote healthy competition among the employees based on their performance.
