Yesterday, YouTube dropped this year’s #YouTubeRewind video under the theme “The Shape of 2017” on their official channel.
Watch it below to refresh the 2017 memories associated with YouTube.
What is YouTube Rewind?
In the last month of each year, YouTube releases a video-mashup of all the ‘biggest hits’ of that year at ‘YouTube Spotlight’.
Popular names from the YouTube world usually make an appearance in the mashup as it blends all of the most clicked videos of the year – from hit songs to viral vlogs – in a mashup.
Who Made it to #YouTubeRewind 2017?
Music video of “Despacito” stood first beating all previous records of most-viewed videos. It nailed over 4.4 billion views in less than a year. With this victory, Despacito also broke YouTube’s 5-years-old record for the most-viewed video that was held by South Korea’s PSY for “Gangnam Style”.
Other music videos that made it to the top 10 list include Ed Sheeran’s “Shape Of You” and Bruno Mars’ “That’s What I Like”. Interestingly, 6 out of the top 10 music videos are in Spanish. Analysts suggest that it’s because of Despacito’s blockbuster success across the globe.
Similarly, the top 10 trending videos of 2017 showed versatility in their types because videos like “Ping Pong Trick Shots | Dude Perfect” and “Inauguration Day — A Bad Lip Reading of Donald Trump’s Inauguration” can be seen in the list along with Lady Gaga’s “Full Pepsi Zero Sugar Super Bowl LI Halftime Show | NFL”.
Surprisingly, PewDiePie, the most subscribed YouTuber, couldn’t be seen anywhere in the video.
Some viewers also showed anger over the appearance of Paul Brothers, who are known for their controversial antics.
Collectively, the 10 top viral YouTube videos bucketed 633 million views (against 550 million views in 2016) and have been viewed for more than 40 million hours.
