Microsoft is testing a major redesign for the Windows 11 search box that removes promotional clutter and makes local results easier to find.
The update is currently rolling out to Windows Insiders in the Experimental channel through a controlled feature rollout. This means not all testers will receive the redesigned search experience immediately. Microsoft has not confirmed when the changes will reach all Windows 11 users in a stable update.
The updated search panel has a simpler home screen. Instead of filling the search window with extra web content, Microsoft says the new version focuses on recent searches and removes unnecessary visual clutter. This should make it easier for users to return to previous searches without being distracted by unrelated content.
Windows Latest reported that the older search panel included items such as image-of-the-day tiles, quizzes, trending searches, top apps, and game recommendations. These elements are no longer shown in the redesigned version being tested by Insiders.
Microsoft says promotional content has been removed from web results inside Windows Search.
In the older experience, web results could show related products and promotions before the actual answer. In the new version, Microsoft says web results should show the most relevant answer first, making the search experience less distracting.
This does not mean Windows Search has completely removed every online feature. Web results can still appear, but users will get more control over whether they want those suggestions to show up.
Microsoft is adding new controls under Settings > Privacy & Security > Search.
These settings allow users to choose whether web results and Microsoft Store suggestions appear alongside local results. Windows Latest reported that users can turn off web results, Store suggestions, or both, allowing for a more local-focused search experience.
This is one of the more important changes because Windows Search has often been criticised for sending users to Bing results even when they were trying to open an app, file, or setting already on their PC.
The redesigned Windows Search gives higher priority to apps, settings, and files when they are a better match.
Microsoft says local items such as installed apps, system settings, and files should appear ahead of web and Store suggestions more reliably. System items such as This PC and Recycle Bin are also easier to discover.
The search engine is also becoming more forgiving of typing mistakes. For example, Microsoft says searching for “utlook” can still surface Outlook instead of immediately showing a web search for the misspelled word.
Microsoft is improving how Windows Search handles files and settings.
The company says search results should now rank more accurately, with more improvements planned in the coming months. File search is also being updated with better support for short two-character searches and improved handling of cloud and connected files when they are the stronger match.
Search results will also show clearer labels, making it easier to tell whether a result is an app, file, setting, web result or Microsoft Store suggestion before clicking it.
The redesigned search experience also improves result previews.
Windows Latest reported that supported files now get a larger preview pane with information such as file type, file path, and last modified date. This should make it easier to identify documents without opening File Explorer first.
The update also makes actions such as Open with easier to access directly from search results.
The new Windows 11 search experience is not yet available to everyone.
Microsoft says the changes are being tested with Windows Insiders and will continue to be refined based on feedback. The company also notes that the experience may vary by region.
For now, the update appears to be a meaningful attempt to address long-running complaints about Windows Search, especially its reliance on web results and promotional content when users simply want to find local apps, files, and settings.
